Please feel free to ask any question and we'll respond as quickly as we can. Thank you for helping us to help you.

Q: Hi! I'm new to the community. What is this RP about?
A: You can take a look at the Plot Information to get an idea of what the RP is about, but here's a basic rundown. Your character is either a hospital staff member or patient on a remote island named Utopia, where the world's top medical professionals are working tirelessly to find cures for the world's most dangerous or fatal diseases. However, these diseases aren't the only things that are being studied here: some of the patients are vampires, werewolves, mutants, or other "unusual" members of society. They have been kidnapped and brought here by force to be studied and used to create cures for these conditions.

Q: That sounds interesting, I'd like to join! What do I need to do?
A: Welcome! We'd like for you to please read the plot information, rules, and the rest of these FAQs. Once you've read them and understood, check the taken and reserved character lists. If the character you want isn't on those lists, please feel free to reserve and/or apply for the character.

Q: When is this community opening? What about applications and character reserves?
A: The community is officially opening on February 15. Applications and Character Reserves are now open, so please check out the Taken Character and Requested Character posts to see what characters have been apped/requested..

Q: I've been accepted! What do I do now?
A: First, make a character journal and reply to the "Accepted" notification on your application, so that we can add you to the contact list. Then make sure to join the RP and Lounge communities and the mods journal, so you can visit the Contact List to find a friends-add list, where you can friend add the other members quickly via the Admin Console.

Q. I don't have AIM/MSN/Yahoo Messenger! How can I get in contact with the mods/other players?
A. Well, if you don't feel like downloading a bunch of messenger programs, there are a wide variety of free, multi-platform messenger clients that will allow you to sign into all of these messengers at the same time (provided that you have a username and password for them, of course). Our favorites for Windows are Trillian, Pidgin, and Miranda; for Mac users, TVJab and Adium are available (Adium is only for Mac OS X, while TVJab works on Mac OS 8.6 or later). If you can't or don't want to download any programs, there is Meebo, a browser-based messenger program that offers access to these messengers in one window. While none of these programs are required, they are mod-recommended for optimum player/character interaction.

Q: What is the money system like on this island and how does my character get paid?
A: The money on the island is based upon credits. -- Hosptial Staff are on payroll and get a respectable salary to support them and their families. Patients, both old and young alike, are well tended for with a monthly allowance to spend in town. Also, patients may get jobs in town to help earn a little more spending money. The cost of living on the island is free, so allowances and jobs are only to earn spending money (and avoid the free hospital food).

All characters will receive a guidebook with their communication device, which explains how money is handled on the island. The explanation is as follows: "The back of the communication device has a special reflective sticker; under this sticker is a special computer chip, which is passed over the payment device to register payment for any purchases on the island. The communication device allows access to your personal account via the home screen, so you can track your purchases and quickly check your balance before making a purchase."

Q: So, what happens if I get in trouble? Will I get banned?
A: We have put a three-strike system in place. You are allowed two warnings by the moderators before bannings will take place, except in serious situations where the mods feel that more drastic action is needed. Please be sure to follow the rules to avoid any trouble.

Q: I heard something about anklets being put on all of the patients? What is the deal with that?
All patients, to make sure they stay on the island, are equipped with a GPS device around their ankle to trace movements, keep up with the identification of characters, and basically keep track of you. ... Ok, not really. But it is equipped with a GPS. Your character can probably determine this easily. The anklet can be removed, although it should be a difficult process. However, even if your character manages to take it off, they are unaware that the people who processed their entrance to the island installed a microchip somewhere into their head. The anklet is only a decoy, and the microchip is extremely hard to determine.

Q: What does the installed microchip do?
The microchip is installed upon arrival to the island. It is extremely hard to detect and even harder to remove. It grants all characters the ability to speak the same language. It allows the owners of the island to keep track of irregular movement. It also identifies the character by individual ID number. Among other things.

Q: What does the island look like?
A: With many thanks and tons of appreciation to TJ, we now have a map of the island drawn that can be seen here.

Q: Can my character leave the island?
A: There are a few adjacent islands that you can visit, if you can swim well. As far as leaving the islands, you can, but it wouldn't be easy. After all, if everyone could leave, we wouldn't have a good way to keep you there! If your character gets interested in attempting to escape, please talk to the mods personally first to determine what could occur. If you plan on leaving the community, we have a different means of disposing of your character. ;)  Please talk with the mods first.

Q: Can my character get married/pregnant?
A: Absolutely! We encourage social interactions between all characters and players alike.

Q: Can I give [info]zaleho_tempest ice cream?
A: We would prefer that you didn't give him any ice cream... as he is highly capable of getting his own.

Thank you for all your questions! Some might get answered and posted quicker than others due to mod discussions. We will try to answer them all.

One more question: What is the location of the tropical island picture used in the utopia posts to get people to join the community?
The image was found on Photobucket, but its original location is at http://www.vistawallpapers.com/img1873.search.htm
Thanks!
...I like your icon.
Thank you! I made it! If you credit me in keywords you can totally have it!
Is this a character-unwillingly-ganked-from-their-own-world type deal? Also, is there a calendar system, or is it just one RP day = one real-life day?
Yes and no, actually. What we're trying to do with it is that characters who are infected with diseases that are infectious or fatal can choose to be sent to this island, while characters who are mutants, vampires, werewolves, or superheroic are kidnapped and brought to the island for research. Of course, the sick patients can be ganked as well, of course.

At this point, there is no calendar system in place, but we may instate one when the RP opens on the 15th.
Okay, so someone who is immortal might be one of the kidnapped ones? :D
Yes, exactly! We are actually working on straightening out a few kinks as far ss certain powers are concerned (specifically mutant powers), but an immortal character would definitely be ganked. :3
hmm... our own calendar system... i havent thought of that before and its definitely interesting but i guess i just wonder about the practicality of it in an LJ format. itd be easiest to just stick to RL day = RP day system.

Jeez... I had a huge long list of great questions for the FAQ then my computer restarted itself and I lost all of it right when I was about to post... dammit. I guess I'll try and remember them a few at a time :/ I'll post later if I think of more you can add.

-Can my character leave the island?
-Do children/teenage characters have to go to school?
-What happens if my character breaks a law?
-What happens if they stay out past curfew?
-Can my character get married?
-Can my character get pregnant?
-What's the security of the island like?
-How do NPCs interact with the other characters?
-What if I want to app a character who was previously killed or died in the RP?
-What do ID #'s mean? ((if you guys were keeping those))
-What positions can I app my character for if I want them to be a part of staff?
-How does the journal system work? Is it based on computers on a Utopia-wide network?
-How closely monitored are journal entries by the island security?
-What's on TV?
-Can I give [info]zaleho_tempest ice cream?
We appreciate your questions and willingness to help! Lots of questions though. I wonder how much we could answer without making this post look too long to read... But we'll definitely try to answer some of these. Thanks!
Question!

I'm curious about the staff members of the hospital... can anybody apply to be one?

Also, how much do the staff members know about what's going on? I mean, are they all part of the master plan, or are some of them just doing their jobs for what they believe is a wider cause?

I guess what I'm really asking is, am I able to take a character as a staff member who was likely to stir things up a little at a later date?

Thanks for your time =)
At this point, any adult who is of the age to have accomplished medical school (and could plausibly have attended, whether from their canon or in an AU) is allowed to apply to be a staff member. Generally that's about 25-26 years of age for physicians, after medical school, internship, and residency, or about 21-22 for nurses. Depending on whether or not the staff member has a certain concentration, that may be longer; we'd recommend looking up the position you would like your character to have within the hospital.

At this point, none of our staff are aware of the true extent of this hospital or its sinister nature, but that certainly doesn't mean that all the doctors have to be innocent. ;) We'd love to see what you have in mind.
If the first part of the post confuses you, you can take a look at our current staff: two of them are medical professionals in their canon (Derek and Angie), but Genma's history is an AU that has put him in a position where he went into medical school to become a lab technician.
Thank you very much, that helps a lot =)

I have a character in mind that I think will prove quite interesting ;D
What do the letters in front of the ID# mean?
